TOUR DESCRIPTION: Sterkfontein Caves are located in the Cradle of Humankind, a world heritage site. The dolomitic hills in this area are 2.6bn years old – more than half the age of the Earth itself. There are many fossil-bearing caves in the Cradle of Humankind. The caves at Sterkfontein are the site of the world’s longest-running archaeological excavation, with digging continuous since 1966.
-
- We join a guided tour into the caves and see where some of these fossils were found.
-
- There is an excellent little museum on site as well as a gift shop and restaurant.
-
- A little further west is the Maropeng visitors’ center set in a huge tumulus with magnificent views over the Magaliesberg mountains. There are interactive exhibitions which give fascinating insights into humankind’s ancestors.
After a tour of the interactive displays at the Maropeng visitor’s centre you can enjoy refreshments overlooking the grassland savannah with the Magaliesberg mountain range in the distance
